Howard Stern doesn't insult retarded people, Canada's broadcast watchdog ruled yesterday, but he does break rules by insulting Poles.

In two rulings by the Canadian Broadcast Standard Council, an industry-run body, New York based radio "shock-jock" Stern (whose show is carried in Toronto on FM station Q107) was found guilty on one charge and not guilty on another. The Council ruled that he did not contravene any of Canada's broadcast codes when he referred to his staff as "retards" and "retarded".
The Council was less tolerant of Stern's comments that "Poles hate Jews", which was found to be in breach of ethics codes. "This accusation of an entire people that they hate other national group....is in this sense abusively discriminatory vis-a-vis persons of Polish nationality". -Doug Saunders
